West Bengal rules a Kolkata employer should check in 2026
West Bengal's professional tax changes on 1 October 2026, and its Labour Code rules are still being drafted. These are the rules that affect contract and temporary staff.

What to plan for when staffing in Kolkata

Durga Puja changes everything for a week
Many workers take leave, offices slow down, and warehouses peak just before. We agree a festive roster and a standby list in August, not in the week before Puja.
Succession in foundries and mills
Experienced foundry and mill workers are ageing, and fewer young people take these jobs. We look for trainable candidates and pair them with experienced hands, and we are honest when a skill is scarce.
Waterlogging and rail disruption
Heavy rain floods low-lying roads and suburban railway stations from June to September. We agree a monsoon attendance plan for critical roles.
Planned rosters, correct deductions
Festive and monsoon rosters agreed in advance, the new PT slabs applied from October 2026, and a coordinator workers can call. That keeps teams stable through the year.

From 1 October 2026, salaries up to ₹20,000 a month are exempt (previously ₹10,000). The new slabs are ₹100 up to ₹30,000, ₹140 up to ₹50,000, ₹170 up to ₹1,00,000 and ₹208 above that, under an amendment notified on 7 August 2026. We apply the new slabs from October wages.
What does a contract worker cost in Kolkata?+
The agreed wage, at least the West Bengal minimum for the employment and zone, plus employer PF (12% of PF wages up to the ₹25,000 ceiling from 17 September 2026), ESI at 3.25% where gross wages are ₹21,000 or less, bonus, leave and gratuity provisions, LWF, our service fee and 18% GST. We send an itemised rate card.
Can you staff jute mills?+
We can discuss it. Mills have their own wage settlements and a long-standing substitute-worker system, so we first check how contract workers would fit your existing agreements before we quote.
