Eligibility

Who can become a security guard in India

Private security guards are governed by the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005 — PSARA — and the rules made under it. These are the standards in the Central Model Rules, 2020. Your State’s rules may add to them.

RequirementWhat the rules sayIn practice
Age18 to 65 years (PSARA Act, 2005, section 10).Many client sites prefer 21 to 50 for night and patrol posts. Supervisors are often older ex-servicemen.
Nationality and recordIndian citizen; not convicted of a serious offence, and not dismissed from the armed forces, police or government service for misconduct.Checked through character and antecedent (police) verification.
Height and build160 cm for men and 150 cm for women; weight in proportion to height; chest 80 cm with 4 cm expansion for men.Measured at the interview or medical check.
Eyesight and hearingFar vision 6/6 and near vision 0.6/0.6, with or without glasses; no colour blindness; normal hearing.Glasses are fine if your corrected vision meets the standard.
FitnessNo flat foot or knock knee; able to run 1 km in 6 minutes; free from contagious disease.A simple fitness check before training.
ReadingMust be able to read English letters and numbers shown on security equipment. The Act sets no minimum education. Many sites prefer 8th or 10th pass, and supervisors need to write reports.

Before your first posting

Training and police verification: what happens and how long it takes

Every genuine security agency must train and verify its guards before posting them. If an agency offers to put you on duty the next day with no training and no verification, that is a warning sign.

PSARA training

  • →Freshers: at least 100 hours of classroom training and 60 hours of field training, spread over at least 20 working days
  • →Ex-servicemen and former police: a condensed course of at least 40 classroom hours and 16 field hours over at least 7 working days
  • →Covers conduct and uniform, access control, checking ID papers, patrolling, fire fighting, crowd control, first aid and emergency drills
  • →Godstone never charges you for training — if anyone asks for a training fee in our name, it is a scam

Police (character and antecedent) verification

  • →You fill a verification form and an affidavit about your background
  • →The check is done through the police or crime databases such as CCTNS
  • →The rules say the report should be issued within 15 days
  • →A verification certificate stays valid for five years, even if you change employer — keep a copy
  • →After verification you get a photo identity card showing your name, the agency, your employee number and validity date
Documents

Documents to keep ready

Bring originals for checking; photocopies are kept in your file. Missing a document does not always stop you — tell the recruiter and they will tell you what you can bring later.

  • ✓Aadhaar card (original and a photocopy)
  • ✓Bank passbook or cancelled cheque in your own name — wages are paid only to your account
  • ✓Two or four passport-size photographs
  • ✓Address proof if your Aadhaar address is old
  • ✓PAN card, if you have one
  • ✓Education certificates, if you have them
  • ✓Old UAN (PF number) and ESIC number, if you worked before — so your PF is carried forward
  • ✓Police verification certificate, if you already have one (valid for five years)
  • ✓Ex-servicemen: discharge book and pension papers
  • ✓Armed guards: valid arms licence

If someone asks you for money, it is not a job — it is a scam

Fake agents target people looking for guard jobs because the jobs are in demand. Here is how to spot them, how to check an agency, and what you should receive from a genuine employer.

The problem
"Pay ₹2,000 for registration"

Fake agents collect a fee, hand over a photocopied joining letter and disappear. There is no client, no gate and no PF number.

What it costs you
A month's wage and a lost month

Money gone, no job, and no record anywhere that you worked — so no PF, no ESI card, and nothing to show the next employer.

Our promise
Zero fee, PF from day one, wages by the 7th

An appointment letter in your hand, PF (UAN) and ESI numbers in your name, wages into your own bank account by the 7th of the following month, and our Chennai office to call on +91 860 850 6800 if anything goes wrong.

Apply the safe way →

Warning signs of a fake job offer

  • →Any fee — for registration, training, uniform, medical, verification or a “joining kit”
  • →A joining letter without an interview, document check or training
  • →Contact only on WhatsApp, with no office address or landline
  • →Requests for your bank PIN, OTP or ATM card, or to keep your original documents
  • →Promises of a “guaranteed” job, abroad posting or pay far above other offers

How to check and report

  • →Ask the agency for its PSARA licence number and check it on the Ministry of Home Affairs portal, psara.gov.in, which lists licensed agencies State by State
  • →To check that an offer really comes from Godstone, call +91 860 850 6800 or email info@godstoneconsultech.in
  • →If you have lost money online, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in
  • →Report fraud calls and messages on the Sanchar Saathi portal (Chakshu), and file a police complaint for any cash taken
Your payslip

Your payslip explained: PF, ESI and what should be on it

A genuine employer gives you a payslip every month. It should show your wages, every deduction and your PF (UAN) and ESI numbers. Here is how a typical guard payslip works.

Payslip lineExampleWhat it means
Basic + DA (your “wages”)₹14,000The core of your pay, on which PF and gratuity are worked out. Under the Labour Codes, if allowances are more than half of your total pay, the extra is counted as wages for PF and gratuity.
HRA and other allowances₹3,000Added on top. Overtime appears as a separate line.
Gross pay₹17,000Total earned for the month before deductions.
PF — your share (12% of PF wages)− ₹1,680Goes into your own PF account (UAN). Your employer adds a matching 12% from its own pocket. PF is compulsory on wages up to ₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026.
ESI — your share (0.75% of gross)− ₹128Applies when gross pay is ₹21,000 a month or less. Gives you and your family medical care at ESI hospitals and cash benefits during sickness. Your employer pays 3.25% on top.
Professional taxDepends on StateA State tax — some States have none, others deduct monthly or half-yearly.
Take-home₹15,192 before professional taxPaid into your bank account by the 7th of the following month.

Example only — made-up figures to show the calculation, not the pay for any post. Employer PF and ESI contributions are never deducted from your pay. Check your PF balance on the EPFO member portal or UMANG app with your UAN; your ESI e-Pehchan card gives your ESI number. Try our take-home salary calculator.

Shifts

Shift patterns and overtime

Security posts run round the clock, so shifts are part of the job. Here is what is normal, and what you should be paid for.

Common

8-hour shifts, three a day

Morning, afternoon and night shifts, usually rotated weekly. The OSH Code sets eight hours as the normal working day.

Common

12-hour shifts, two a day

Day and night shifts. The four hours beyond eight are overtime and must be paid at twice your normal rate under the Code on Wages — check it on your payslip.

Rest

Weekly off

You should get a weekly rest day. If you work on it, you should get a substitute day off or be paid for it as the rules require.

Safety

Night shifts for women

Women can work night posts only with their consent and with the safety and transport arrangements that the OSH Code rules require.

Security guard job FAQs

Pay, documents, training and joining time — the questions candidates ask most.

Apply for a guard job →
What does a security guard job pay?+

Pay differs by client site, city, shift pattern and guard category, so we do not publish one figure. Every post is at or above the applicable state minimum wage for security services, with PF and ESI deposited from day one and overtime at the statutory rate. The recruiter tells you the exact monthly figure for your post on the call, before you travel anywhere.

Do I need experience or a PSARA certificate to apply?+

No. Freshers are accepted for unarmed guard posts, and the PSARA training is given after selection — 100 classroom hours and 60 field hours, or a shorter course for ex-servicemen. Ex-servicemen are preferred for head guard and supervisor roles. You need to meet the physical standards, read English letters and numbers, and clear police verification.

What documents are needed to join?+

Aadhaar card, a bank passbook or cancelled cheque in your name, passport photographs, address proof, and your PAN card, education certificates, old UAN or ESIC number and police verification certificate if you have them. Bring originals for checking; copies are kept in your file.

Is there any fee to get a security guard job?+

No. Godstone Consultech never charges a candidate any fee at any stage — not for registration, not for training, not for placement. The OSH Code 2020 (section 49) also bars a contractor from charging contract workers any fee or commission. If anyone demands money in our name, report it to +91 860 850 6800 and we will act on it.

How soon will I be placed after applying?+

Where posts are open, we aim to call you within two to three working days. After the interview, police verification (up to 15 days under the rules) and training (at least 20 working days for freshers) come before your first posting. Keep your phone reachable and your documents ready to move faster.

What is the age limit for a security guard job?+

Under the PSARA Act you must be between 18 and 65 years old. Many client sites set a narrower range for night and patrol posts, which the recruiter will tell you.

Why is PF deducted from my salary?+

12% of your PF wages goes into your own Provident Fund account, and your employer adds another 12%. It is your savings and pension, not a fee. Check it any time on the EPFO member portal or UMANG app with your UAN.

Do I have to pay for training or uniform?+

Not with Godstone. We never charge candidates for registration, training, verification or placement. If anyone asks for money in our name, call +91 860 850 6800 and report it.

Can women apply for security guard jobs?+

Yes. Women guards are needed at hospitals, offices, malls and hostels, mostly on day shifts. Night posts are offered only with your consent and the safety and transport arrangements the law requires.
