Breakdown analysis tested

Maintenance engineer staffing for plants that cannot afford repeat breakdowns.

The same conveyor fails every three weeks, the shift log says bearing replaced each time, and nobody has asked why. Maintenance engineer staffing is the difference between fixing a machine and fixing a cause. Godstone Consultech screens for breakdown analysis, preventive planning, spares control and team leadership, employs every worker on our own payroll, and keeps the PF, ESI, wage and contract-labour records — so the person on your floor is documented, replaceable and accountable from day one.

Maintenance engineer reviewing a gearbox with two technicians beside a machine
What the role covers

Shift engineering, planning and reliability.

Maintenance leadership is judged on repeat failures. We screen for engineers who work in root causes and MTBF rather than replacements, and place them at the band your plant needs.

  • ✓Shift maintenance ownership and breakdown response
  • ✓Root-cause analysis and corrective action closure
  • ✓Preventive and predictive maintenance planning
  • ✓Spares inventory, AMC and vendor coordination
  • ✓Technician team supervision and skill development

Repeat failures are a leadership gap

Replacing a part is maintenance; removing the cause is engineering.

The problem
Hired on a claim, not a check

An engineer hired on years of experience runs the plant reactively, closing tickets without a single root-cause entry in six months.

What it costs
What the gap actually costs

Unplanned downtime that repeats on a cycle, spares consumption nobody can explain, and a production plan quietly built around the machine that always fails.

The fix
Root causes, plans and records

Breakdown-analysis screening before an offer, preventive plans and MTBF tracking expected in the role charter, and spares and AMC discipline reviewed monthly.

The role

What a maintenance engineer owns in an Indian plant

A maintenance engineer owns equipment availability for an area or a shift: leading breakdown response, deciding whether to repair or replace, closing root cause on repeat failures, running the preventive and predictive maintenance calendar, raising and closing work orders in the CMMS or SAP PM, controlling critical spares and AMC vendors, and enforcing lock-out and permit-to-work. The engineer leads fitters and electricians; the difference between the two roles is ownership of the cause, not just the repair.

We staff engineers by discipline — mechanical, electrical, utilities, automation and instrumentation — and the technicians who work under them:

Fitters

Mechanical maintenance hands: alignment, bearings, gearboxes, hydraulics and pneumatics.

Fitter manpower supply →

Electricians

Permit-holding electricians for panels, motors, starters and plant wiring.

Electrician manpower supply →

HVAC technicians

Chillers, AHUs and precision cooling in utilities and clean rooms.

Grades and disciplines

Maintenance grades we recruit and deploy

Tell us the equipment, the discipline split and whether the role owns a shift or an area. That decides the grade.

GradeTypical backgroundOwnsEngagement model
Shift maintenance engineerDiploma in mechanical or electrical, 2–5 yearsBreakdown response and handover for a shift; first-level root causeContract or third-party payroll
Area / section engineerDegree or diploma, 5–8 yearsPM calendar, repeat-failure closure, spares and AMC for an areaContract or permanent
Automation / instrumentation engineerDegree or diploma with PLC, HMI and drives experiencePLC logic fault-finding, VFD and servo issues, sensor and loop checksContract or permanent
Utilities engineerDiploma or degree with compressors, DG sets, chillers or boilersUtility uptime and energy; boilers need State boiler-operation certificatesContract or permanent
Reliability / planning engineerDegree with CMMS and data skillsMTBF/MTTR analysis, PM optimisation, criticality ranking, spares planningUsually permanent

Engineers are usually paid well above the State minimum wage, so wage-category rules rarely bind; employment terms and statutory costs still apply. For permanent searches see permanent recruitment.

Assessment

How maintenance engineers are assessed

Engineers are assessed on how they think through a failure, not on a quiz. Each exercise is built from equipment like yours.

01

Repeat-failure case

A conveyor bearing replaced three times in a month: run a why-why analysis, name the evidence to collect, and propose a permanent fix.

02

PLC and electrical fault-finding

Read ladder logic and I/O status to find why a machine will not start; troubleshoot a DOL or star-delta starter from its drawing.

03

Hydraulic and pneumatic circuits

Read a circuit drawn with standard symbols and explain why a cylinder drifts or moves slowly.

04

PM plan build

Turn an OEM manual into a preventive-maintenance plan with frequencies, checks and spares, prioritised by criticality.

05

Safety scenario

Plan lock-out/tag-out and a permit for a job on a live line, including who signs and how energy is verified at zero.

06

Reference checks

Calls to the previous plant on breakdown ownership, team leadership and how the candidate left.

Licences and safety

Certificates, safety duties and compliance

Certificates that may be required

  • ✓Electrical: anyone designated to operate or work on electrical lines and apparatus needs a certificate of competency or electrical work permit from the appropriate Government (CEA Safety Regulations, 2023, regulation 3)
  • ✓Boilers: State-certified boiler attendants or boiler operation engineers, depending on boiler size
  • ✓Lifting equipment and pressure vessels: periodic examination by a competent person under State rules
  • ✓We verify certificates before deployment and record expiry dates

Safety duties we brief

  • ✓Lock-out/tag-out with zero-energy verification before any intervention
  • ✓Permit-to-work for hot work, work at height, confined spaces and electrical work
  • ✓Incident and near-miss reporting to your safety team
  • ✓Machine guarding restored and checked before handover to production

Compliance we carry as employer

  • ✓EPF enrolment before day one; above ₹21,000 gross, ESI does not apply and employees' compensation cover is needed instead
  • ✓Statutory bonus applies only to employees earning up to ₹21,000 a month in wages, so most engineers fall outside it
  • ✓Salary paid by the 7th of the following month
  • ✓Contract-labour registers under the OSH Code (which replaced the CLRA Act, 1970), shared monthly
Shifts and pay

Shift cover and the salary basis

Continuous plants need a maintenance engineer on every running shift, with breakdown standby on weekly offs; day-shift-only plants usually need one engineer per area plus on-call cover. Shutdowns and turnarounds need short-term teams — see project manpower supply.

BasisFigureSource and notes
Market referenceMaintenance engineer average ₹28,430 a month; typical range ₹16,812–₹48,076Indeed India, 122 reports, 2026. Junior engineers average about ₹22,500 and senior engineers about ₹37,400 a month.
Higher-paying locationsAhmedabad, Greater Noida and PuneSame Indeed series; automation and utilities specialists usually price above mechanical shift roles.
Our estimator₹32,000 gross a month for a shift maintenance engineerPlanning figure for a diploma engineer with PLC exposure. Area and automation engineers are quoted separately.

Indicative only, not an offer. Salaries depend on discipline, equipment, city and shift. The legal floor is still the State minimum wage for the category, but engineers are rarely near it.

What do you screen for in a maintenance engineer?+

A repeat-failure root-cause case, PLC and electrical fault-finding, hydraulic and pneumatic circuit reading, a preventive-maintenance plan built from an OEM manual, a lock-out and permit scenario, and reference checks with the previous plant.

Are maintenance engineers supplied on contract or permanent?+

Both. Contract or third-party payroll suits shift cover, projects and shutdowns; permanent recruitment suits the engineer who will own plant reliability long term.

Which disciplines do you cover?+

Mechanical, electrical and utilities maintenance, automation and instrumentation, and reliability or planning roles. Technicians — fitters and electricians — are staffed separately.

Does an electrical maintenance engineer need a licence?+

Anyone designated to operate or work on electrical lines and apparatus must hold a certificate of competency or electrical work permit from the appropriate Government under regulation 3 of the CEA Safety Regulations, 2023, and be entered in your register of designated persons. We verify it before deployment.

How long does the search take?+

We aim to share a first shortlist within five working days, and for contract engineers to join in 10–20 days; permanent hires depend on the notice period, often four to eight weeks.

What does a contract maintenance engineer cost?+

The gross salary, plus employer PF, EDLI and admin charges, gratuity provision, employees' compensation cover (ESI does not apply above ₹21,000 gross) and the service fee. Statutory bonus usually does not apply at engineer salaries. See how staffing fees are calculated.

Can you staff a shutdown or turnaround?+

Yes, as a short project team of engineers and technicians with defined start and end dates. See project manpower supply.

Is there a replacement period on permanent placements?+

A replacement period can be agreed in the recruitment terms, with the replacement search prioritised over new mandates. Ask for it in the proposal.
