QC inspector staffing so the first-off clears the first time.

A line waiting on a first-off approval is a line not running, and an inspector who cannot read the drawing holds up everything behind them. QC inspector staffing is where quality systems either become real or become paperwork. Godstone Consultech screens for instrument handling, drawing and GD&T interpretation and sampling discipline, employs every worker on our own payroll, and keeps the PF, ESI, wage and contract-labour records — so the person on your floor is documented, replaceable and accountable from day one.

Quality inspector measuring a component with a micrometer at an inspection table
What the role covers

In-process, incoming and final inspection.

Inspection is a measurement job and a documentation job in equal parts. We test both — instrument handling and drawing interpretation, then record-keeping discipline that survives a customer audit.

  • ✓In-process inspection and first-off approvals
  • ✓Incoming material and supplier-part inspection
  • ✓Final inspection, sampling and dispatch clearance
  • ✓Instrument use: vernier, micrometer, height gauge, CMM support
  • ✓Non-conformance recording and rework verification

Quality escapes are usually inspection escapes

The defect existed; the check did not catch it.

The problem
Hired on a claim, not a check

An inspector who cannot interpret a GD&T callout passes a batch that is dimensionally out, and signs the record that says otherwise.

What it costs
What the gap actually costs

A customer complaint, a containment exercise, sorting cost across finished stock, and an audit that questions every record that inspector signed.

The fix
Tested measurement, honest records

Instrument handling and drawing interpretation tested before deployment, sampling plans understood, and documentation discipline supervised — with calibration awareness on record.

The role

What a QC inspector does on an Indian shop floor

A QC inspector decides whether parts move on. Depending on the post, that means checking supplier parts at goods inward, approving the first-off after every setup, patrolling the line against the control plan, running final or pre-dispatch inspection, and recording it all on inspection reports and SPC charts your customer may audit. The inspector also tags and quarantines non-conforming material and raises the non-conformance report.

The job only works if the inspector is independent of the person making the part. Contract inspectors report to your quality lead, not to production. Related roles:

Skill levels

QC grades we staff

Define the scope first — incoming, in-process, final, CMM or lab — because each needs a different test.

GradeTypical backgroundWorks independently onUsual minimum-wage category
Line / patrol inspectorITI or diploma in mechanical, 1–2 yearsChecksheets against the control plan, gauge checks, tagging and segregationSkilled
Incoming / final inspectorDiploma in mechanical, 2–4 yearsSampling to AQL, full dimensional reports, first-off approval, pre-dispatch auditsSkilled or highly skilled
CMM operator / programmerDiploma or degree with CMM software experienceProgramming and running CMM checks, alignment to datums, report interpretationHighly skilled; usually paid above the floor
Quality engineerDegree or diploma with 4+ yearsCustomer complaints, root cause, PPAP files, SPC analysis — often a direct or permanent hireNot usually minimum-wage bound

Skill categories come from each State's minimum-wage notification under the Code on Wages, 2019; the mapping is typical, not universal. For senior quality roles see permanent recruitment.

Trade test

The QC inspector test, station by station

Every station uses real parts and your drawings where you can share them.

01

Drawing and GD&T

Read tolerances, flatness, perpendicularity, position and runout callouts, and explain what MMC changes on a hole pattern.

02

Instruments and least count

Vernier (0.02 mm), micrometer (0.01 mm), height gauge, dial and bore gauges, slip gauges, thread plug and ring gauges — read and zero each correctly.

03

Measure and report

Measure a sample part fully and complete a dimensional report without transcription errors.

04

Sampling to AQL

Pick the sample size and accept/reject numbers for a lot from the AQL tables (IS 2500 Part 1 / ISO 2859-1) and make the lot decision.

05

SPC and calibration

Spot out-of-control points on an X-bar and R chart, and refuse a gauge whose calibration is overdue.

06

Non-conformance handling

Tag, segregate and quarantine suspect parts, and write a clear non-conformance report.

CMM candidates also align a part to its datums and run or edit a measurement programme on the software you use.

Records and compliance

Record integrity, PPE and the compliance behind each inspector

Record integrity we enforce

  • ✓Readings recorded at the time of measurement, never filled in later
  • ✓Gauge ID and calibration due date written on every report
  • ✓Corrections struck through and signed, not overwritten
  • ✓Escalation straight to your quality lead on any reject or doubt

PPE and area rules

  • ✓The PPE of the area being inspected: safety shoes, glasses, ear protection
  • ✓ESD protection on electronics lines
  • ✓Gowning and hygiene rules in food and pharma areas
  • ✓Lab safety rules for hardness and material testing

Compliance we carry as employer

  • ✓EPF and ESI enrolment before day one; ESI covers gross wages up to ₹21,000 a month, and employees' compensation cover applies above that
  • ✓Wages at or above the State minimum for the category, paid by the 7th of the following month
  • ✓Overtime at twice the ordinary wage rate (OSH Code, section 27)
  • ✓Contract-labour registers under the OSH Code (which replaced the CLRA Act, 1970), shared monthly
Shifts and pay

Shift cover and the wage basis

Inspection must cover every production shift, including nights and weekends, or first-offs wait and parts move unchecked. Plan at least one inspector per running shift per inspection point, plus relief for leave. The OSH Code caps ordinary hours at eight a day; hours beyond that are overtime at twice the ordinary rate.

KPIs and service targets

What to hold QC inspectors, and us, to

Escapes

Defects found downstream or by the customer that the inspection point should have caught.

Report accuracy

Re-checks by your quality lead on a sample of reports; readings should match within gauge capability.

First-off turnaround

Minutes from first-off submission to approval or rejection. Slow approvals stop machines.

Calibration discipline

Reports using overdue gauges should be zero, verified at each shift start.

Our service targets

We aim to deploy tested inspectors in 7–12 working days and to replace exits within 15 days, with the inspection scope and sampling plan agreed before day one. Targets are written into the SLA schedule.

Before you hire

Three QC staffing mistakes to avoid

Inspectors reporting to production

An inspector whose supervisor is judged on output is under pressure to pass parts. Keep the reporting line in quality.

No limit samples

Cosmetic defects judged from words alone vary by person and shift. Give every inspection point approved limit samples.

Only covering the day shift

Nights and weekends are when unchecked parts move. Cover every running shift.

What is tested for a QC inspector?+

Drawing and GD&T interpretation, instrument handling and least count, a full dimensional report, AQL sampling decisions, SPC chart reading, calibration awareness and non-conformance handling.

Do you supply inspectors for incoming and final inspection?+

Yes — incoming supplier-part, in-process and final or pre-dispatch inspection, with the scope and sampling plan agreed with your quality lead before deployment.

Can inspectors run a CMM?+

CMM operators and programmers are screened as a separate grade, on alignment to datums and running or editing programmes on the software you use.

Who does a contract QC inspector report to?+

To your quality lead, for all inspection decisions. We handle employment, attendance and conduct. Keeping inspectors out of the production reporting line protects their independence.

What qualification should a QC inspector have?+

A diploma in mechanical engineering is typical; ITI holders with metrology experience work well as line inspectors. The practical test decides the grade.

How do you ensure records are reliable?+

Readings recorded at the time of measurement, gauge ID and calibration status on every report, supervisor review, and a defined escalation route for non-conformances.

How fast can QC inspectors be deployed?+

We aim for 7–12 working days including the practical test. CMM programmers and quality engineers can take longer.

How is QC inspector staffing priced?+

The gross wage for the grade (at or above the State minimum), plus employer PF, EDLI and admin charges, ESI where gross is up to ₹21,000, bonus and gratuity provisions, and the service fee. Specialist metrology roles price above line inspection. See how staffing fees are calculated.
