A data centre is a building where human error is the largest remaining risk. Staffing it means people who follow method statements exactly, log everything, escalate early and stay awake at 3am — and enough of them that no shift ever runs one person short.
Roles, headcount and site city. We aim to send a costed proposal within one working day.
Uptime is delivered by the electrical and mechanical teams, but the roster also has to cover monitoring, escorting, security and the smart-hands requests colocation clients raise at any hour.
Redundant power and cooling exist precisely so that equipment failure is survivable. What is not survivable is a switching sequence performed from memory.
One technician covering a night shift, no second pair of eyes on a switching operation, method statements treated as reference rather than instruction.
Plus the client audits that follow, plus a reputation cost in a market where colocation buyers ask for incident history before signing.
No single-person shifts, MOP and escalation discipline trained and tested, log and handover culture enforced, and a bench that keeps the roster full through leave and attrition.

The roster is the product. It is built to cover leave, sickness and attrition without thinning a shift.
India's data centre capacity is concentrated in a few metros, each with its own campus belts and its own competition for critical facility technicians.
The largest concentration of capacity, along the Thane–Belapur belt, Airoli, Mahape, Rabale and Panvel, with the tightest market for experienced technicians.
Campuses around Ambattur, Siruseri, Sriperumbudur and the city's cable-landing stations.
Fast-growing hyperscale and colocation capacity on the city's western and southern fringes.
Noida and Greater Noida campuses, plus enterprise facilities in Gurugram.
Enterprise and colocation facilities serving the IT and GCC base, and newer campuses near Pune.
Emerging eastern capacity, including large AI-focused campuses announced for Visakhapatnam.
The most common understaffing error in data centres is planning heads per shift instead of heads per year. With a 48-hour working week and leave, training and attrition to cover, this is the arithmetic.
| Position (two people on every shift) | Person-hours per week | Heads at 48 h/week | With ~15% leave and training reserve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical critical facility technicians | 336 | 7 | 8 |
| Mechanical / HVAC technicians | 336 | 7 | 8 |
| BMS / DCIM monitoring (one per shift) | 168 | 3.5 | 4 |
| Security access desk (two per shift) | 336 | 7 | 8 |
Four teams rotating through three 8-hour shifts gives every team weekly offs without anyone crossing 48 hours a week. Overtime covers only true exceptions; it is capped by State rules and paid at double rate under the OSH Code.
Uptime Institute's Management and Operations assessment, customer due-diligence and ISO 27001 audits all examine how the facility is staffed. This is what we keep ready for them.
Technicians who watched the facility being tested know it far better than anyone who joins after handover. We plan the operations team into the commissioning levels.
Senior technicians join to see equipment at factory acceptance and on delivery; stores and documentation support start.
Electrical and mechanical technicians shadow vendor start-up of UPS, DG, switchgear and chillers.
Operations technicians take part in functional tests and draft the first MOPs and round sheets.
The full roster is on site for the integrated test, including failure scenarios, so each team has seen the facility under stress.
The same people move onto the four-team operations roster, with a trained bench to cover leave.
Answers we give in the first call, written down so you can compare vendors on the same terms.

Yes — a four-team rotational pattern with relief cover, plus a trained bench for leave and attrition. Festival and holiday coverage is built into the roster rather than negotiated each time.
No. Two-person minimum is a condition of our deployment in critical facilities, because second-person verification on switching operations is the single cheapest outage prevention available.
Yes, and it is the right time to onboard the operations team. Technicians who witnessed L4 and L5 commissioning understand the facility far better than anyone who joins after handover.
Both are rostered roles with defined response times. Escorting is logged against access requests, and smart-hands tasks are ticketed and time-stamped so the client sees what was done and when.
For anyone with white-space or customer-rack access we complete identity, address, police, previous-employment and education verification before deployment, and collect signed confidentiality undertakings. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, with rules notified in November 2025 and obligations phasing in, makes access control and staff accountability even more important for operators.
Every position covered by two people on every shift needs about 336 person-hours a week, or seven people at 48 hours each; with leave and training reserve, about eight. A small facility with electrical, mechanical, monitoring and security positions quickly needs 25 to 30 people on the roster.
Electrical operation and maintenance must be done by authorised, competent persons under the CEA (Measures relating to Safety and Electric Supply) Regulations 2023, which usually means a State electrical licence or certificate of competency for the relevant voltage. We verify these before deployment and keep copies in the qualification matrix.
On the loaded wage plus a service fee. The loaded wage covers gross pay, employer PF of about 13% on PF wages, employer ESI where gross wages are within ₹21,000 a month, bonus and leave provisioning. Night, weekend and on-call allowances are shown as separate lines, and the reliever reserve is visible in the headcount rather than hidden in the rate.
Many operators keep the facility manager and shift leads on their own payroll and use a contractor for technicians, monitoring, smart hands, security and housekeeping, where rosters need constant backfill. What matters for uptime is that the contractor staff are trained on your facility and evidenced to the same standard as your own.
Send the facility spec and go-live date. We propose the roster, the two-person discipline and the commissioning-to-operations transition.
